What is ITRI

The India’s Translational Research Initiative (ITRI), a nation-wide, collaborative philanthropic initiative aiming to augment the translational research ecosystem and catalyse the lab-to-market journey of academic innovations.

What ITRI Does

India produces world-class research but struggles to convert it into scalable innovations: a gap often referred to as the “Valley of Death” between laboratory invention and market adoption.

ITRI addresses this challenge by building an ecosystem that connects academia, industry, philanthropy, and government
Establish Translational Research Centres (TRCs) as national hubs for applied research in critical technology domains.
Create shared backbone infrastructure: pilot-scale manufacturing, testing facilities, supercomputing, and AI.
Foster collaboration between researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry partners through a hub-and-spoke model.
Provide programme management, legal, and donor engagement services to ensure accountability, efficiency, and scale.

What is ITRI's model and approach

ITRI functions as a platform, not a fund.
It doesn’t conduct research directly or seek profit. Instead, it facilitates institutional partnerships, mobilizes resources, and ensures smooth operational alignment across multiple TRCs.

Mapping and Gap Identification – Assessing ecosystem strengths and TRL readiness across Indian institutions.
Capacity Creation – Strengthening infrastructure, talent, and partnerships to accelerate lab-to-market translation.
Ecosystem Building – Connecting research, capital, and industry through shared services and national-level collaborations.

What is Translational research

Translational research bridges the journey from scientific discovery to market deployment.
It covers the intermediate stages (Technology Readiness Levels 4–7), involving prototype development, validation, and pilot production transforming academic insight into usable technologies and enterprises.

By enabling this transition, translational research turns knowledge into impact: driving industrial innovation, employment, and national self-reliance.
